Environmental Engineering

Day by day, the nature and the environment are facing severe challenges and threats. The environment is getting polluted by the human activities. We have established many industries, factories and the environment are becoming polluted due to tons of smoke emission from these industries. These factories and industries discharge their waste liquid materials in to the open water. This leads to water pollution. And even the toxic solid waste is left in the open land. The toxic waste gets accumulated into the land and makes it barren and toxic. Though the development is necessary but it has raised many critical problems for the nature. These problems are so serious that many of the animal and plant species have gone extinct or are endangered.  In such scenario, environmental engineering has gained much attention as it helps in the improvement of the nature and protects it. Environmental engineering is a multidimensional mission which focuses on keeping the environment healthy and clean.

Environmental engineering combines science with engineering principles for the nature protection, improvement of natural environment, to provide healthy water, air and good land for the living life. Environment engineering applies engineering technologies to clean and protect the environment and ensures its sustainability. Environment engineering uses methods to solve the nature’s problems and to prevent the degradation of the environment. This fast emerging engineering sector applies the knowledge of water, air, soil etc. with the engineering technologies.  It includes many different activities such as water and air pollution and control, waste disposal and treatment, recycling, public health issues etc.

The discipline combines various other engineering subjects such as civil engineering, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, engineering geology etc.  Environment Civil engineering concentrates on hydrology, water resources management and water treatment plant designing. Environment Chemical engineering mainly concerned on the environmental chemistry, such as advanced air and water treatment technologies and separation processes. There are various environmental policies and environmental laws which are formed to maintain, regulate and control the environment and its protection.

The environment protection has become a global concern.  Global warming is increasing. The glaciers are melting down. This is creating imbalance in the nature and natural resources.  The CFC content in the environment, global warming, ozone depletion, air pollution due to smoke from factories, soil pollution and contamination, water pollution, industries and daily traffic etc are some of the major challenges which are to be managed. Environment engineering is working to overcome and control these challenges for the present as well as the coming future generation. It helps to provide better measurements for the nature and its health. Environmental engineering researches and discovers the methods for prevention, controlling and solving the environmental problems (air pollution control, industrial hygiene and public health, hazardous waste etc).

A cleaner and healthier environment means a healthier life. So environmental engineering has a very important, key role.  The main goal is to ensure the societal development and the consumption of natural resources (water, air and land) is sustainable. There is a great demand of environment engineer in public sector. Many consulting firms, government agencies, municipalities, industries  etc have their doors open for environment engineers. There are many NGOs also, working for the protection and conservation of environment and the nature.
